Veteran Bollywood actress Reema Lagoo passed away at the age of 59 after reportedly suffering from cardiac arrest. After the actress complained of chest pain on Wednesday night, she was rushed to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Andheri, Mumbai where she breathed her last.
When contacted, Lagoo’s son-in-law Vinay Waikul, he confirmed the news to Times of India and said, “She was absolutely fine but around 1 am she complained to us of chest pain so we took her to the hospital. However, around 3:15 am she passed away due to a cardiac arrest.”
Reema Lagoo’s funeral took place on Thursday afternoon with her friends and colleagues from the industry present to pay her their last respects. From Aamir Khan to Kajol, Rakesh Bedi to Viraf Patel, various generations of film and TV artistes came together to bid the veteran actor a final adieu.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actor Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt and filmmaker Karan Johar were among those who took to social media to rue her death. The actor’s death came as a shock to her fans and friends alike.
The actress was born on February 3 in 1958 and appeared in Marathi and Hindi films, theatres and television shows, serving the industry for nearly four decades. She was best known for playing mother’s roles in blockbusters such as Maine Pyar Kiya, Aashiqui, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Vaastav, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Saath Saath Hain. She has played on-screen mother tosome of the biggest Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. She won four Filmfare Awards in the Best Supporting Actress category. She had also done extensive work on television including Shrimaan Shrimati and Tu Tu Main Main.
The actress was currently working on a television show by Mahesh Bhatt, Naamkaran. She played a negative character Dayawanti Mehta on the show, which was a far cry from the mother’s roles that defined her film career. Talking about the loss, Mahesh Bhatt tweeted, “We said goodbye to one another after making a promise to meet soon. That never happened. We think we have time. We don’t!!Goodbye Reemaji.”
A heartbroken Sanjay Dutt, who has worked with Lagoo in several films including Vaastav, Gumrah and Saajan said that he “lost a mother again today.” He added, “We worked together in several movies and every time that I worked with her I learnt something new. Her demise has left a void which is difficult to fill. May God give strength to her family and close ones.”
