One day after Urijit Patel handed in his resignation from the post of the Governor of RBI after a lomg draw battle of opinions and issues with the government, Shaktikanta Das has been appointed the new governor of RBI. Das, born on 26 February 1955 is 63 years of age and us a retired IAS officer of the 1980 batch of Tamil Nadu Cadre. With his appointment he becomes the 25th governor of RBI.
Prior to his appointment as the governor of RBI, Shaktikanta Das was earlier a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission of India and India’s Sherpa to the G20. Das has been appointed for a period of three years in this position. He is also a former Secretary, Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and is currently member of the 15th Finance Commission. During the demonetisation of 2016 he held the post of Economic Affairs Secretary.
The appointment of Shaktikanta Das as the new governor of RBI has approved by the Modi government. With this appointment all eyes will be set on what the new governor does to resolve the tussle between the government and the RBI and whether the steps taken are in favor of the general public or not.
