The US-Bangla Airlines flight which was headed to the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu from Dhaka, Bangladesh crashed down while landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. The incident took place on March 12, 2018, at around 2:20 pm local time. The Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft went off the runway and plunged into the nearby football field.
A total of 71 people, 67 passengers and 4 crew members were onboard when this tragic accident took place. The passengers included 37 men, 27 women and 2 children out of whom 33 were citizens of Nepal. Around 40 people died, although some sources say that the death toll is around 50, in the crash out of which 9 people who were rescued breathed their last in the hospital they were admitted to. Other survivors were taken to the nearby hospitals.
The exact reason for the crash is yet to be examined. Some officials speculate technical problems to be one of the prime reasons while some airport officials claim that the plane landed in the wrong direction. A similar incident of this magnitude was about to happen with a US- Bangla Airlines in Dhaka but the pilot was quick enough to notice the fault in the plane’s propeller. However, it is not clear whether it was the same plane that crashed now.
People who witnessed this crash deem it one of their horrific experiences. The flames from the plane continued to blaze for hours and the firefighters worked for long to put off the fire.
Many people across the globe have been paying condolences to the families of the deceased. Nepalese PM K P Sharma Oli expressed his grief over this shocking incident and promised that the government will investigate the issue immediately.
