Oscars is undoubtedly one of the most awaited award functions of the year where the best work of art gets its recognition and praise. It is always packed with suspense, surprises and never fails to create hype among the people. Every year the magnitude of its grandeur keeps increasing.

Here are some of the interesting facts about the magnificent ceremony:

  • The nomineesat Oscars are given a gift bag worth $100000.

It contains a diamond necklace, a 12-night Tanzania trip for two worth $8000 and an option to donate $10000 to donate to an animal shelter. Other gits include edible pieces of chocolate jewellery, pepper sprays and a DNA test.

  • Marlee Matlin became the first deaf actress to win an Oscar, for the film Children of a Lesser God in 1987.

  • Ben-Hur(1959), Titanic(1997), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King(2003) have won most number of awards(11).

  • Acceptance speech (5 minutes 30 seconds) was delivered by Greer Garson for winning Best Actress award for the film Mrs Miniver(1942).

  • WaltDisney holds the record of winning most number of awards, 22 awards from 59 nominations and 4 honorary Academy Awards.

  • Bob Hope has hosted the Oscars 19 times making him the most hosted host.

  • Due to metal shortages during World War II, the Oscar statuettes were made of plaster for three years.

 

  • During the earlier ceremonies, the statuettes presented were gold-plated solid bronze. Within a few years the bronze was replaced with a britannia metal – a pewter-like alloy which is then plated in copper, nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold.
  • The Godfather: Part II(1974) is the only sequel to have won the Best Picture award.

  • Gone with the wind(1939) is the longest movie to win the Oscars . The movie runs up to 234 minutes.
