The headlines in 2017 included the collision of two neutron stars, though no evidence was found by scientists of gravity leaking into dimensions which are supposedly hidden. The known dimensions existing today are still limited to three.

Scientists doubt that like the organisms floating in mid-ocean don’t know what’s above and beneath them, the human race might be unaware about the existing dimensions which are yet to be discovered.

“Gravity might be able to explore those other dimensions”, says David Spergel who is an astrophysicist at Princeton University.

 

Such extra dimensions if and when discovered have the potential to explain a few theories existing in physics such as dark matter (a yet to be defined source of mass) and dark energy (which causes the rate of expansion of universe to accelerate)

 

“That’s why people get excited about such developments”, says Daniel Holz, an astrophysicist at the University of Chicago.

The new results found by scientists apply only to large extra dimensions although there are very many theories which exist and predict extra dimension of space and time into which gravity could leak. Talking of dimensions, the interesting fact is there are proposed theories which state that there are dimensions existing which are smaller than the fraction of a millimetre.

One more theory which was proposed by a bunch of physicists almost two decades ago predicted the existence of large extra dimensions.  Over long distances, the effect of gravity leaking into such dimensions can be visible which clearly explains that why gravity behave as if there are only three spatial dimensions over smaller scales, such as the size of the solar system.

In the new study, the researchers concluded that the gravitational waves don’t seem to weaken on their journey towards earth as they must travel more than 65 million light years before leaking to an additional dimension.
