George Weah, an internationally acclaimed former footballer from the country of Liberia has been sworn -in as the 25 the President of the country on 22nd January 2018 in the capital city, Monrovia.
The Liberians celebrated their country’s first peaceful, democratic transition of power in 47 years by dancing as they waited to see the sworn in ceremony of their new President. It was indeed a good day for them.
Mr. Weah had captured a place in people’s hearts with his football skills and personality that inspires many. He is the first African football player to be named FIFA Player of the year.
He is a great humanitarian and had been an integral part of the crisis in his war-torn country. He had also been a UN Goodwill Ambassador and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, the latter which he had to resume because of his entry into politics.
He had contested in the presidential elections twice before this, in the year 2005 and 2011 but lost those two. He had announced his nomination for the 2017 elections in the month of April 2016 and won the 2017 elections earning nearly 38% of the total votes in the first round and 60% in the second round.
Mr. Weah feels being the President of a country is a totally different feeling for him as he has spent most of his life on football fields.
The Liberians believe that their lives are about to be dramatically improved. He vowed to the people during the campaign that transforming the lives of all Liberians is a singular mission and focus of his presidency.
