Born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, Sridevi worked in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada films before entering Hindi films. She started acting in the late 60s, but her performance in a Malayalam film Poombata won her the state award for best child artist.
Sridevi died on the 24th of February, 2018 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates due to a cardiac arrest. Her death was very sudden and highly unexpected. A loss, that is being mourned by the entire nation.
Her Bollywood debut was as a child artist in Julie (1975). Sridevi went on to become one of the greatest female stars India ever had.
Regarded as Hindi cinema’s first “female superstar”, Sridevi was the recipient of five Filmfare Awards. She was also awarded the Padma Shri (2013) the fourth highest civilian award by the government of India.
She and Anil Kapoor, her real-life brother-in-law have had one of the most memorable on-screen pairings.
Her most remarkable films include Sadma, Himmatwala, Chandni, Mr. India, Gumrah, Nagina, ChaalBaaz, Tohfa, and Mawali among others. She took a 15-year long gap after Judaai, after which she starred in English Vinglish and won the hearts of many. She last appeared in MOM in 2017. But her last film will be in Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan and to be released in December of this year.

Rajnikanth tweeted, “I’m shocked and very disturbed. I’ve lost a dear friend and the industry has lost a true legend. My heart goes out to her family and friends. I feel the pain with them #RIPSridev… you will be missed.”

Sridevi is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and two daughters – Janhvi and Khushi. Her daughter Janhvi will make her Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s directorial Dhadak.
