Two of the best American sitcoms of all times, (well at least in my opinion) would be Friends and How I met you mother.
First airing in 1994, Friends told the story of six people in their twenties and the different experiences they faced, and how the presence of each other made lives beautiful for them. The show was widely acclaimed, and so when it came to an end in 2004, the public was genuinely upset. Friends was not only a show, but an era, that celebrated life, friendship and everything that most of us want to have, but hardly ever get.
However, just after it ended, in 2005, another show based in New York city, called How I met your mother went on air. The story is set in 2030, where an adult Ted Mosby(the titular character) tells his kids the story of how he met their mother, though most of the part of the story focuses on his life, relations, and experiences which he shared with his close group of friends, Lily,Marshal, Barney and Robin.
Now, it so happens that due to slightly similar nature of the two shows, for eg. The ensemble cast, or the comedy genre, people usually compare which one is better than the other. And though almost both these shows seem to have equal popularity, there are reasons why one of them have an edge over the another.
No doubt that both the shows are really creative in nature, but having been aired first, the plot and comedy in Friends seem much more original. The show can be seen to be well too ahead of its time, as even after 23 years of its inception, the youth can still relate to it. There are too many laugh out loud moments, and you just cannot stop it, no matter how hard you try. On the contrary, no matter how much the writers and creators have tried, how I met your mother remains limited when it comes to originality, with most of the characters and even some of the episodes reminding you of something that you have seen in Friends already.
Not only this, friends keep us occupied during each one of its 236 episodes, as you are curious to know what happens to the group, and how it all ends. How I met your mother keeps us a lot involved during its initial seasons, but as the curiosity for knowing who the mother is increases, the plot feels like unnecessarily exaggerated, with most of the times you wanting to skip a few scenes, because you have seen something similar way too many times already.
Lastly, coming to how both the series ended. While Friends had a happy ending for all the characters, making us think that they lived happily ever after, how I met your mother ends on a note that makes us question the very foundation of the show, which is the reason behind the story being told. Not only that, it is an agreed fact that the viewers wanted to know more about the mother, who despite being the main reason why people are watching the show appears only in 14 out of the 208 episodes.
And so, apart from the fact that how I met your mother is more modern in nature, and a bit more realistic, if it comes to the question of which one is a better sitcom, it would definitely always be Friends. And you know why? Because it will always be there for you no matter what you do.
