From the centuries, a desire of a separate place for alike people grabs the mind. Some of these desires come up while some are suppressed and fail to get a recognition. These desires have always bought up various clashes that have always led to unrest for the people. The same conditions have been perpetuated in Darjeeling. An atmosphere that used to give a soothing effect to the mind now gives endangering vibes. This is how things changed. So, Here is the story of this city.
A spark came up from the fears of Bengali language being imposed in the schools in the areas administered by GJM (Gorkha Janmukti Morcha). These areas are mostly occupied by Nepali-speaking Gorkhas. Though this issue was settled by Bengal’s CM Mamta Banerjee. As she clarified that Bengali would be an optional subject. But, this could not resolve the conflict. Rather, this revived a 100-year-old demand of separate Gorkhaland. Bimal Gurung being the chief of GJM along with the supporters decided to fight a final battle. But, Despite an agreement with state and centre of an autonomous administrative council instead of full-fledged statehood, the issue was not settled. The reason for this uproar is not limited to imposing of Bengali language. Ahead of elections of 2009 and 2014, BJP in a bid to win Darjeeling seat made a promise. The promise was the establishment of separate Gorkhaland.
A raid by police officials in GJM office in Patellas portrayed various questions. A lot of bows and arrows, axe, bombs, scythes, and cash were seized which cannot be collected within a day or few. So, This further creates a suspicion of involvement of third-party too. Being a hilly area, suspicion falls on places across borders.
Development works in the hills have been interrupted by the Gorkhas from past 50 years. This time it has taken more intense form. Completely limiting the main revenue source of the place that is tourism, it has also intruded in the food supply.
