Asian Games 2018 : Phoghat Sisters Out Of Team After Missing Trials


For the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games to be held from August 18 to September 2, Ritu Phoghat (48kg) and Sangeeta Phoghat (59kg class) challenge ended before the challenge began. On Sunday, the selection of Indian women wrestlers in the centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) was a trial. Ritu and Sangeeta could not take flight from Delhi.

Ritu and Sangeeta were training in Georgia and they had to reach here for the trials, but they could not reach the time. After waiting for 11 o’clock in the morning, the two were declared disqualified. Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, President of Indian Wrestling Association (WFI) said that reaching the times is the responsibility of the wrestler. “At the moment  I can say that both of these will not be sent to Asian Games”.

Selection of Pinki Jakhar (53 kg, Haryana), Puja Dhanda (57kg square, Haryana), Divya Kakran (68kg, Uttar Pradesh) and Kiran (76kg, Railways) after the trials in the presence of Brijbhushan and Chief Coach Kuldeep, Made for Asian Games. Apart from this, WFI had already allowed Vineesh Phogat (50kg, railway) and Sakshi Malik (62kg, Railways) not to participate in the trial.

Babita Phogat (55kg class) career is in danger. WFI chairman Brijbhushan Sharan Singh said that there was a serious injury in both knees of Babita. The union is keeping an eye on their health but there is not much hope. The chief coach said that the injury was serious. Surely his return will be a miracle. Although I am hoping for his return.
