Protest for Gorkhaland

Darjeeling in West Bengal is up and down by the protests. It is led by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) for a separate state of Gorkhaland. The Internet services are closed since Sunday. So, Tourists are cancelling their tickets for Darjeeling. Hence, It is affecting the lives of common people and economic activity is at a halt.

Gorkhaland

Gorkhaland is a proposed state in India. It is demanded by the people of the Darjeeling Hills and the people of Nepali Indian Gorkhas ethnic origin on the Northern part of West Bengal on the basis of linguistic and cultural difference with regard to Bengali culture. The demand is still undergoing in the form of several strikes, rallies, etc. Two mass movements for Gorkhaland have taken place under the Gorkha National Liberation Front (1986–1988) and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) (2007–present). The Voice is finally raised from Gorkhas.

A century ago, the people of Darjeeling areas felt that on the basis of their ethnic history and distinct identity, a separate administrative unit for the Gorkhas would be an initiative for the greater good of the community. So, This separate administrative unit, with time, took the shape of a demand for a separate state within India. It is also raised in the Constituent Assembly, by Ari Bahadur Gurung. He is a barrister from Kalimpong and a member of the Constituent Assembly. In 1986, Subhash Ghising, a former Army soldier, and a poet revived the demand for the separate state. He also coined the term Gorkhaland.

Ahead of the 2009 general elections in India, the Bhartiya Janta Party again announced its policy of having smaller states and to create two more states, Telangana and Gorkhaland, if they won the general election. So, GJM supported the candidature of Jaswant Singh of BJP. He won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat with 51.5% votes in his favour. In the July 2009 budget session of Parliament, three Parliamentarians— Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Sushma Swara, and Jaswant Singh—strongly pleaded for creating a state of Gorkhaland. Now the BJP is in power. So, GJM wants that a new state of Gorkhaland should be made but Center and State governments are not helping them. Hence, This will lead to more agitation. It will affect the lives of common people will remain on the stake. Gorkhaland is the Birth-Right of Gorkhas. Hence, This land will bring peace in the lives of Gorkhas.
