Activist Rehana Fathima was one of the six women who under police protection tried to enter the Sabarimala temple to offer prayer to the deity Ayyappa. But this is not what brought her to the discussion today. But she is in news because of her arrest by the Pathanamthitta police today. The problem that led to her arrest is related to religious sentiments. She is charged with the offence of hurting the religious sentiments of the people because of her Facebook post.
In the said post, ie, a photo of herself that she posted on her Facebook page on September 30. Fathima is seen dressed as an Ayyappa devotee wearing a rudraksha and sporting a patta, with the caption ‘Thathvamasi. Following this, a case was filed against her filed by the Sabarimala Samrakshana Samithi. The complaint was directly handed over to the District Police Chief of Pathanamthitta.
Although Fathima applied for an anticipatory bail in the Kerala High Court on October 30, it was rejected by the court on November 13. In addition, the court instructed the police to take the necessary actions. Following this Fathima was arrested from Kochi by the Pathanamthitta police, and is to be taken to the Pathanamthitta town police station for questioning.
It is probable that the police will issue a statement soon regarding the current situation and steps taken by them as it is a sensitive and rather high profile case.
