“Hey, it’s Hannah. Hannah Baker. Don’t adjust your…whatever device you’re hearing this on. It’s me, live and in stereo. No return engagements, no encore, and this time absolutely no requests. Get a snack. Settle in. Because I’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended.”
If you have watched the popular show 13 Reasons Why, these words would have sounded familiar. If you haven’t, don’t worry I’m not going to spoil anything for you.
Even before its release the show had created a big hype on the internet because Selena Gomez was one of its executive producers. But there other meaningful reasons as to why this show is worth watching.
Here are 5 reasons why you should watch this show.
The show is based on a book by the same name. Hannah Baker, a high school student commits suicide. After her death, Clay, a student from the same high school receives audio tapes in which Hannah has detailed 13 reasons why she killed herself.
Usually, in mainstream American TV, high school life is glamorized. High school students look like 23-year-old models, it’s the place where people find the love of their lives and live happily ever after. But 13 Reasons Why couldn’t be more different. It shows the harsh reality of American high school life; bullying, depression, anxiety, drugs, alcohol, assault. It is a story that needs to be told. It is a reality for many young adults and teenagers who are going through a difficult time.
Another reason why 13 Reasons Why is an amazing show is because of the performances by the actors. Every actor plays his/her role so perfectly that the viewer is unable to imagine anyone else playing that role. Katherine Langford who plays the role of Hannah Baker is simply brilliant and so is Dylan Minette who plays Clay Jenson. Kate Walsh’s acting as the role of Hannah’s mother is penetrating. Her acting is raw and honest. She plays the role of a mother whose daughter committed suicide and she doesn’t have any idea why.
The makers of the show haven’t left anything out. All the scenes are shown as they are, without glamorizing it, without sugar-coating anything. Certain scenes are so powerful and intense that they will haunt you and keep you up at night.
The 13 episodes long show is bound to touch your heart. It will teach you to be kinder not only to others but to yourself. No matter how old we are, we are most often our own harshest critics. It reminds us not to judge other people without knowing them fully. As Hannah says in the show, “no one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people.”
The last reason is because of the show’s other components like music, cinematography are amazing as well. It’s perfectly put together. There’s nothing you’d want to change the way it has been made. No matter what age you are, you will relate to the show. Even after it’s over, it will stay with you for a long time.
